June 2009 Newsletter
Newsletter for the World of Words by Elias Tobias
Blast from the Past
With major films hitting the theaters, like the new Star Trek movie, taking a look back at the past and examining how characters got to the present, I will have a month or two of my own prequel at the World of Words by Elias Tobias. The poems I wrote in high school and the first years of college, especially the ones that were published, will be put on the web blog. Some daily blogs will contain several poems, since the older works are typically shorter.
The time to re-tool the web site took several days, so there were a few missed days last month that would have normally had posts. I apologize for those days. Also I have started a new full-time job, different than anything I’ve done before, and the time to get trained for it has left a few gaps in daily posts. However, each week this month will feature at least four poems per week: a Spanish poem, unpublished poems, and a previously published poem, linked to the publishing credits.
The publishing credits history page has been updated so that poems already on the web blog are now easily accessible, and as the older published poems appear, links to these poems will be set to the poems listed in the publishing credits.
Pick a picture for a photo book
The Indianapolis Star and its partners are in the process of creating a coffee table-style photo book about Indianapolis, and I have submitted several photos. The pictures that get the most votes are going to be considered for publication, so click on the logo above to get to my photos. Click on any one of them and cast your vote. You support will be appreciated.
Let your opinions count, and take the survey
The World of Words by Elias Tobias is conducting a survey during the month of June. It is simple with only 10 questions. Help me to help the readers out. Click on the survey logo above to get started.
More introductions coming
In my first year of college at Ball State University, I got to know a group of writers and poets that pledged to keep in touch and maintain each of the talents. To make it “unofficial,” we decided to create an unchartered fraternity called Lambda Sigma Chi. We do, however, have a secret handshake and code of honor. It has one chapter and the the six original members are still alive and corresponding with our creative writing.
Response to the group has been positive so far. Throughout this month, I’ll introduce the other members of Lambda Sigma Chi and selections of their poetry along with their backgrounds of where they are now and what they have been doing the last 25 or so years. So far, readers have been introduced to Paul Abernathy. The other brothers are Adrian Parker, Bill Kelso, C.J. Chatham III, Rufus McDougal and Christopher Benedict. Go Lambda Sigs.
Editors Note: Since the release of this new book or category in last month’s newsletter, we have learned that there really is a Lambda Sigma Chi organization, a national service sorority. However, there are no chapters of this organization listed with Greek organizations at Ball State University. So the boys and I will keep on going, like we have the past 30 or so years, with all respect for the real Greek group. We just want to share our writings.
Elias Tobias not on Facebook
With the increasing complex networking of social media on the Internet, duplication in names can occur. There is an Elias Tobias connected with Facebook, but this website is not connected with the author of that site in any shape or form. The name, Elias Tobias, as far as The World of Words by Elias Tobias is concerned, is the pen name for Michael D. Hall, and this web site is the creative outlet for Mr. Hall, the owner of this web site. More information can be found at Linked In about Mr. Hall.
The playful November wind
whistles through the crack in
the window.
The intelligent radiated heat
numbs me in security
as I read this book.
As I turn the page, I see your
firey eyes and your haunting smile
rise slowly off the page
like a spirit released from captivity.
Yet this assignment is due,
and I quickly turn the page
to remove your image and to bury it
in the past with the other
forgotten pages.
The I set the book down on the desk,
the book’s spine intact.
I rest my head with cupped hands
and cover my eyes
I see you again.

Wow, cool site. Thanks for posting. Really like reading sites like this. Omar
