Clouds

Clouds

You looked up in the sky,
saw the clouds turn black
and said it looked like
it was going to rain.

I said the wind was so strong
that the black clouds were
going to move along and
the sun would shine.

Both of us were right since
the brief large drops of rain
caused some pain, but the
clouds went away to bring
a bright sunshiny day.

Making Bread

Four-legged Thief

I’m telling a story I
know is hard to believe,
but it’s the honest truth.
Something you should see.
There was a mouse who
made residence in this old house.
The trees were turning, and
the weather was getting cold.
The creature got a little bold.
It crunched on crackers during
the middle of the night.
I knew that wasn’t right.
I couldn’t go back to sleep
it made so much noise.
I got pretty annoyed.
The next day I bought a pair
of mouse traps guaranteed
to get the enemy.
At first I used peanut butter,
then I tried a little cheese.
All that happened was the
mouse got a snack free,
without moving the spring.
My description of the mouse
began to get obscene.
The rodent was a pest.
I didn’ want it to
think it was a pet.
I set the traps again,
and I used the same bait.
The mouse took the food
with a safe escape.
I set the traps again,
and the next day it was dead.
It losts its life in the night
reaching for another bite
of an apple.

Stones

There are stones
      embedded in the road.
They are part of
      mountains that grew old.
What once were solid
      is now brittle and weak.
They have changed to a path,
      a paved avenue, a street.
Ancient routes that are
      scarred by deep ruts
are traveled now by tourists
      spending vacation bucks.
All things in the world
      move to a natural clock.
Changes are an ordered factor
      in a world that won’t stop.

The Cake

I’ll celebrate life today. My life.
I was born on this day.
I think I’ll buy a cake, but
I may have to eat it myself.
That’s okay.

Parties and places are in a
time people call yesterday,
and some of my dear friends
and family have gone away.
Some have risen to a better
place, I pray.

Each bite will be a tribute to
those who didn’t stay
around for seconds.
